We missed the obvious tie-in with Bush's state of the Union address where he solemnly informed us that America was addicted to oil.

    Here you go, big guy.

Sure thing, cowboy. Ennis had a better chance of breaking his addiction than America does.

Willie Nelson has now thrown his, uh hat?!?!?, into the ring

Willie Nelson's new topic: Gay cowboys
25-year-old song says cowpokes 'Fond of Each Other'

    Wednesday, February 15, 2006; Posted: 8:40 a.m. EST (13:40 GMT)

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) -- Country music outlaw Willie Nelson sang "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys" and "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys" more than 25 years ago.

He released a very different sort of cowboy anthem this Valentine's Day.

"Cowboys Are Frequently, Secretly (Fond of Each Other)" may be the first gay cowboy song by a major recording artist. But it was written long before this year's Oscar-nominated "Brokeback Mountain" made gay cowboys a hot topic.

Available exclusively through iTunes, the song features choppy Tex-Mex style guitar runs and Nelson's deadpan delivery of lines like, "What did you think all them saddles and boots was about?" and "Inside every cowboy there's a lady who'd love to slip out."

The song, which debuted Tuesday on Howard Stern's satellite radio show, was written by Texas-born singer-songwriter Ned Sublette in 1981. Sublette said he wrote it during the "Urban Cowboy" craze and always imagined Nelson singing it.

Someone passed a copy of the song to Nelson back in the late 1980s and, according to Nelson's record label, Lost Highway, he recorded it last year at his Pedernales studio in Texas.

Nelson has appeared in several Western movies and sings "He Was a Friend of Mine" on the "Brokeback Mountain" soundtrack.

Wait, this movie was about homosexual cowboys? Not only that but it was by the same guy that brought us that craptastic film The Hulk? Well, I will be damned, I didn't know that.

    Red face

So, Brokeback didn't get Best Picture. Is Annie Proulx bitter?

Yes. Yes, she is. Quite a lot, actually.

Face it, Annie. The Oscars are a popularity contest, and yours was not the favorite this year. Here is something to note; much of the public praise of Brokeback has smacked of the Emperor's New Clothes. If you don't praise it you risk being thought homophobic. When the Academy had the chance to vote privately, they voted as they would not have publicly.

I unfortunately watched Crash just before embarking on my recent journey, thinking I was going to have significant face time with a board member of Lionsgate Entertainment. I got the face time, but unfortunately the guy is no longer on the board.

I dare trav and gae to watch "Crash". It will be their most-hated movie EVER.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">No, I haven't seen Crash. I have heard it depicted as a movie that sends the message that we are all victims of, and on some level participate in, racism and bigotry. This is also a socially-aware theme, and for the large percentage of Academy members that live in L.A., its setting in L.A. and the themes of race, crime, prejudice and fear in America may strike more personal resonance and relevance than BBM, no matter how beautiful and well done BBM was.

Good news, everybody! Brokeback Mountain came out on DVD on Tuesday, April 4th. I signed in to Amazon and it was on my recommended list. It is scary how well their algorithms work.

Funny, when I was at the local Wal*Mart? on Tuesday, it was not on the rack with the new releases.

So, for only $16.98 you can own this and see it as many times as you like. In slow motion if you want.
